See how Ethiopia, a vibrant & exciting bird-rich country, become one of Africa`s leading birding destinations since in recent years. Ethiopia has a number of peculiar mammals, scenic diversity and cultural uniqueness. Spot birds like Marabou, Yellow-billed and Saddle-billed Stork, Pink-backed Pelican, Gull-billed and White-winged Tern, and more. 

DAY 01

Arrival/ Addis Ababa

  • Arrive at Addis Ababa and be welcomed by our representative and transferred to your hotel.

DAY 02

Awash National Park

  • In the morning, drive to Awash National Park.

  • Do birding & game view after having entrance tickets at the head office of the Awash National Park. Seeable birds in the park: White-bellied Bustard, Buff-crested and Kori Bustard, Northern White-crowned Shrike, Somali Fiscal, Tawny Eagle, Rosy-patched Bush-shrike, ticked the Madagascar Bee-eater, Black-billed Barbet, Green Pigeon, Abyssinian Ground-Hornbill, throat Finch, Yellow-necked Spurfowl. 

  • Continue birding & wildlife viewing along the plains.

Overnight – at chosen lodge – Awash Park

DAY 03

FULL DAY BIRDING IN HOT SPRINGS & FENTALÉ CRATER LAKE

Do full day birding in Hot Springs & Fentalé Crater.

  • Eat a lake breakfast and drive east along the main trucking route that takes traffic ultimately to Djibouti and the Gulf of Aden.

  • Stop nearby Mount Fantalé for targeting bird – Sombre Rock-Chat, Shining Sunbird, Red-fronted, Warbler, Bristle-crowned Starling, etc.

  • Walk down to the shoreline of Lake Beseka for many aquatic birds – Marabou, Yellow-billed and Saddle-billed Stork, Pink-backed Pelican, Gull-billed and White-winged Tern, Spur-winged Lapwing, Kittlitz’s and Common Ringed Plover, Ruff, Little Stint, Curlew Sandpiper, Red-billed Oxpeckers on the back of animals, and Orange-bellied Parrot.

  • Continue driving to Bilen Lodge – sitting in the arid Afar country north-east of the Awash National Park. Birding in the close vicinity of Bilen Lodge & nearby included Abyssinian Roller, Superb Starling, White-headed Buffalo-Weaver, Dark-Chanting Goshawk, Shining, Nile Valley Sunbird, Rupp ell’s Starling, White-browed Coucal, Four-banded and Chestnut-bellied Sand grouse, African Pygmy-Kingfisher.

DAY 04

Dinsho and Bale Goba

  • Drive from Awash National Park to Bale Goba. 

  • On the way & in Dinsho Juniper Forest (headquarter of Bale Mountains National Park). Seeable birds would be Red-billed Chough, water birds including Roget’s Rail, Abyssinian Ground Thrush, Abyssinian Long-eared Owl, and mammals: Mountain Nyala, Menelik’s Bushbuck, Bohor, Reedbuck.

  • Then, continue to Bale Goba and birding on Gaysay open Plains to see some good birds such as Red-shouldered Cuckoo-shrike, Doubled-toothed Barbet, Hooded Vulture, Spotted and African Dusky Flycatcher, Ethiopian Oriole, Spotted Creeper, African Cuckoo and Northern Puffback, the Yellow-fronted Parrot.

DAY 05

The Bale Mountains

  • Game view and birding in the Bale Mountains. Seeable birds here include Moorland Chat, the endemic Spot-breasted Lapwing, Chestnut-naped Francolin, Golden Eagle, Rouget’s Rail, Ruddy Shelduck, Augur Buzzard, Ayres’s Hawk-Eagle, Thekla Lark, and Lanner Falcon. Also, Ethiopian Meadow Rat, Stark’s Rabbit, Abyssinian Wolves, Bale Monkey in Harenna Forest (endemic) is often to be seen.

DAY 06

Sof Omar – A spectacular Natural cave

  • Arrive at Sof Omar cave, one of the deepest caves in the world. This place remains an important site of pilgrimage for Ethiopian Muslims. More importantly for birders is one of the most reliable sites for one of Ethiopia’s rarest endemics, Salvadori’s Seedeater (Serin). Most of the birds to be seen in Sof Omar are Lesser Kestrel, Dwarf Ravens (Somali Crow), Brown-tailed RockChat (one of the target species), Upcher’s Warbler, Lilac-breasted Roller, Rosy-patched Bush-shrike, Slate-colored Boubou, African Citril, Bush Petronia, Pygmy Batis, Red-billed Hornbill. And mammal sightings included Ethiopian Rock Hyrax, Yellow-spotted Hyrax and Vervet Monkey.

  • On the return trip, stop and walk along the road, birding in the trees and shrubs

DAY 07

Shalla – Abijata Lakes

  • Drive from Bale Goba to Langano (291km) and do birding and game view at Abijata – Shalla Lakes National Park. 

Overnight – at chosen lodge – Langano Birding and game view in Abijata – Shalla Lakes National Park and Lake Langano.

DAY 08

Langano – Addis- Departure

  • Drive back to Addis Ababa and do birding through the Great Rift Valley lakes.

  • In the evening, the stone age tour and travel will invite you to a farewell dinner party in one of the traditional Ethiopian restaurant with traditional music and dance from different ethnic groups.

  • Transfer to Bole International Airport to fly back home.
