Hammer tribals in Omo Valley

DAY 01

Arrival

  • Upon your arrival at Bole International Airport, you will be received by the tour representative in arrival hall who will also assist you with the transfer to your hotel.

  • Check in to the hotel and relax.

  • Overnight stay.

DAY 02

Fly Addis - Bahir Dar

  • This morning, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Bahir Dar. Upon arrival, you will be received by the tour representative and transferred to your hotel. 

  • Arrival and check-in at the hotel/lodge.

  • Later, you will take a boat cruise on Lake Tana to visit the 14th-century Monastery of Ura Kidane Mihret, which is the most famous of the Zege peninsula monasteries. It is known for beautiful painted maqddas and priceless collection of crosses and crowns.

  • In the afternoon, you will drive to the village of Tis Isat to see the Blue Nile Falls (Due to the newly constructed electric dam in the vicinity, the water level of the falls could be minimal).

  • Overnight stay in Kuriftu Resort & Spa or Abay Minch Lodge

DAY 03

Drive Bahir Dar – Awara Amba – Gondar

  • Today, you will drive to Gondar.

  • En route, you will visit the village of Awra Amba, which is located off the Woreta - Weldia 'China-Road'. This unique settlement that is considered to be a prime model of self-help and above all gender equality. Women have equal rights as men and there is no division of labor. Men cook, women plow, and religion has no place. They believe in hard work and being good to people.

  • After your visit to Awra Amba, drive to Gondar, a town founded in 1636 A.D by the great Emperor Fassiladas. Set in a landscape of incomparable beauty, it was the Royal Capital of Ethiopia. 

  • Visit the impressive castles and churches built by Emperor Fassiladas and his descendants.

  • Later, proceed to the fascinating Debre Birhan Selassie Church, with its walls and ceilings decorated with scenes of Biblical lore and medieval history.

  • Overnight stay in Mayleko Lodge or Taye Belay Hotel.

DAY 04

Fly from Gondar to Axum

  • Get transferred to the airport for a flight journey to Axum, Ethiopia’s oldest city. Axum was once the center of great empire and the seat of learning for the ancient Ge’ez language and literature. 

  • City tour of Axum includes the Stelae Park, St. Mary’s Church, the sanctuary chapel which houses the Ark of the Covenant, the Coronation Yard and Axum Museum, Queen of Sheba’s palace ruins and King Kaleb’s tomb. 

  • Overnight stay in Consular Hotel or Sabean Hotel.

DAY 05

Fly Axum – Lalibela

  • This morning, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Lalibela. It is also known as Africa’s Petra, and is Ethiopia’s crown jewel. It is home to the most famous churches and the scene of many major religious ceremonies. 

  • You will visit the magnificent rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. These churches were hewn out of solid rock between 800 - 1200 AD and are still active houses of worship. 

  • Overnight stay in Hotel Tukul Village or Mountain View Hotel.

DAY 06

Excursion to Genete Mariam

  • Today, you will go for an excursion to Genete Mariam, one of the most interesting outlying churches. Supported by pillars, the church is very different from any of the excavations in Lalibela as it is not hidden within a trench but carved openly on a rocky hilltop – though the cover of scaffolding. According to a legend, Genete Mariam was excavated during the reign of Yakuno Amlak, the king who 'restored' the Solomonic line in the early 13th century. 

  • Overnight stay in Hotel Tukul Village or Mountain View Hotel.

DAY 07

Fly Lalibela – Addis Drive Langano

  • Be transferred to the airport for your flight to Addis Abada.

  • Upon arrival, you will be received by the tour representative and will be driven southwards through the Rift Valley to Lake Langano. 

  • En route, visit Lake Ziway the largest of the upper Rift Valley lakes with an area of 400 sq. km. Its shores are lined with reeds and water lilies, sheltering a variety of water birds. 

  • From there, proceed towards Lake Langano. The lake is a place to relax and enjoy water activities. Though its mineral content gives it a brown color, the water is clean and pleasant for swimming. 

  • Overnight stay in Africa Vacation Club or Sabana Lodge.

DAY 08

Langano - Chencha - Arba Minch

  • This morning you will drive to the town of Arba Minch. 

  • The route is very scenic, and along the way you will stop in the mountain village of Chencha, home of the Dorze people. The Dorze are renowned for their cotton weaving, called Shammas, as well as their distinctive beehive-shaped houses made from woven thatch.

  • From Chencha, you will proceed to Arba Minch.

  • Overnight stay in Paradise Lodge or Swaynes Hotel.

DAY 09

Arba Minch - Konso – Jinka (240km ~8hrs)

  • Leaving Arba Minch, drive south to Jinka. En route, visit one of the Konso villages. The Konso people live in a land of low terraced hills. They are reputed to be one of hardest working groups in the country. Their elaborately terraced hillside grows some of the country’s best coffee. They are known for their tradition of erecting peculiar totems on the graves of their deceased.

  • On today’s drive, you will experience interesting cultural encounters with different tribes along the way. These tribes include the Ari, Benna and Tsemay. 

  • Overnight stay at Jinka Eco Omo Lodge.

DAY 10

Jinka – Mago – Jinka – Turmi

  • Enjoy a day excursion to Mago National Park to visit the Mursi village. The Mursi are one of the most original ethnic groups. They live in very low huts made of straw leaves. The women like to wear terra cotta on their enormously stretched lower lips and ear lobes. The men are famous for their hairstyles. 

  • Visit and drive to Turmi via Key Afer. 

  • Overnight Buska or Turmi Lodge.

DAY 11

Turmi sightseeing

  • Today, you will get to visit the people of Hammer tribe. The Hammer are one of the most beautiful and dignified people in the Omo basin. The women wear elegant leather skirts festooned with tiny pearls. Elaborate hairstyles are another form of personal adornment. 

  • Overnight stay in Buska or Turmi Lodge.

DAY 12

Turmi – Arba Minch

  • Depart from Turmi and proceed to Arba Minch. 

  • En route, you will visit the Erbore tribes and Borena pastoralists who own innumerable cattle. 

  • Upon arrival, check in to Paradise Lodge or Swaynes Hotel for an overnight stay.

DAY 13

Fly or Drive to Addis Abada

  • Today, you will drive back to Addis, enjoying sightseeing en route.

  • In the evening, you will attend a folklore dinner where you will have a chance to taste several local dishes and watch dances of Ethiopia’s various ethnic groups. Traditional coffee will also be served during the ceremony.

  • Overnight stay at the accommodation.

DAY 14

Departure

  • Today, you will be transferred to the airport for your departure.
