Embark on cultural tour to Omo Valley of Southern Ethiopia to visit the interesting tribal people at their villages and colorful weekly held markets. Take this trip and experience the unique way of life of the tribal people of Southern Ethiopia! 

DAY 01

Fly South to Arba Minch

  • Take flight # ET 135 (13:30 - 15:10) south to Arba Minch and drive for about half an hour to Lake Chamo where you will have a boat ride of an hour to see big African Crocodiles, families of hippos, and various low land water birds. 

  • Late in the afternoon, from the balcony of your hotel room, enjoy the great view of the twin Rift Valley Lakes of Abaya and Chamo.

DAY 02

Head further south to Turmi via Konso

  • Today, you drive 310 km farther south in the Ethiopian  part of the Great East African Rift Valley to the small town of Turmi crossing the beautiful Konso Highlands and the Weito River Valley. 

  • Along the way, stop at Konso to visit one of the interesting villages set atop hills and fenced with huge stone walls. The hardworking Konso people are also famous for building beautiful stone terraces to protect soil erosion by rain water, and for their colourful hand woven cotton clothes. These aspects of the Konso people  are recently registered by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. 

  • Then, with a lunch stop at Kanta Lodge at Konso town, drive to Turmi for overnight.

DAY 03

Excursion from Turmi

  • Go for an excursion to Murulle to see the Karo people who are famous for their body paintings and they are the fewest in number among the Omo Valley tribal people as their women are married with the neighboring tribes of Benna and Hamer. 

  • Then, continue to Kangate, crossing the Omo River with traditional boats made of tree trunks. At Kangate, visit the Nyangatom people who are noted for their body skin scarification. 

  • As there is a weekly Monday market in the town of Turmi today, stop along the way to take pictures of the tribal people of Hamer going back home from the market.

DAY 04

Set off to Jinka via Dimeka

  • After breakfast, visit one of the villages of the Hamer people around Turmi. The Hamer ladies are typically known for their hair dressing using clay (chalk) and butter, and the "Bull Jumping" Ceremony of the boys in which they jump (in fact running) over the backs of bulls so that they show in public their transfer from childhood to adulthood. If lucky, we attend one today. 

  • Then, visit the weekly cultural market of the Hamer and Benna people at Dimeka and then,drive to Jinka.

DAY 05


  • In the morning,go for an excursion crossing the Mago National Park where you will see dik-diks, kudus, and if lucky, families of wild dogs. 

  • Then, visit the villages of the Mursi people who are typically famous for the women's clay plates which is inserted in their lower lips. According to the anthropologists, they started this practice to look ugly to the eyes of the slave traders, so that they would not be taken, and with time it became one of the measures of beauty so that the girl who carries a wide lip plate receives more cattle in the form of dowry during her wedding. 

  • After visiting the Mursi, we drive back to Jinka to visit the Cultural Museum of the people of the Lower Omo Valley where we get good information about their lifestyle.

DAY 06

Head back to Arba Minch

  • In the morning, visit the villages of the Ari people to learn how Enjera (Ethiopia’s national bread) is prepared, how they make their house hold utensils from clay, and how they make their strong alcoholic drink by distillation. 

  • Then, drive 40 km to Key Afer where you will attend the most colorful multi-cultural weekly market of the Omo Valley which is attended by the tribal groups of Ari, Benna, and Tsemai. 

  • Finally, drive back to Arba Minch with a lunch stop at Arba Minch.

DAY 07

Fly back to Addis Ababa

  • With an early start, drive 45 km to Chencha in the Goge Mountains to visit the villages of the Highlander Dorze people. The Dorze are noted for their cultivation of Enset or the False Banana Tree, their colorful hand woven cotton clothes, and their huge huts made of bamboo trees. The bamboo huts, which look like the face of an elephant, are about 12 meters high when first made, and they get shorter with time as termites eat the bottom. As such, locals have to adjust the length of their gates. 

  • Then, check into Arba Minch airport for the flight back to Addis (15:40 - 16:45). 

  • In Addis, you will be my guest at one of the best traditional Ethiopian restaurants of the city where you will taste varieties of delicious Ethiopian meals and enjoy live dance shows of the different people of the country.

  • 6550 USD Per Group (* Maximum two people)
  • Three meals a day with soft drinks/bottled water.

  • Accommodations for six nights at the mentioned places of stay with a Twin/Double Bed Room Sharing basis.

  • All entrance/admission fees to visit villages, towns, parks, etc.

  • Private 4WD Toyota Land Cruiser equipped with seat belts and air conditioning with fuel (gasoline) and driver's allowance.

  • Transfer in and out services.

  • Professional and experienced English-speaking tour guide for the entire route (guide's time).

  • All on-site guides and translators.

  • Boat rent at Lake Chamo and to cross the Omo River.

  • Guide Airfare.

  • Scouts at parts.

  • Bottled water in the vehicle.

  • And, all related government taxes.

  • Any alcoholic drinks.

  • Payments to take picture and/or videos of the local people.

  • Domestic flight fare.

  • Any expense of personal nature such as souvenirs, laundry, gratuities, etc.

  • Any expense which is not mentioned in the "Included" list.

  • This is a private customised tour which can be adjusted to fit clients' date of start for the tour and length of the trip planned. 

  • June, July and August is the rainy season, so please prepare your trip accordingly..

  • There is a payment to take portraits of the local people which is about 5 birr per head which is about a quarter of the US Dollar.

  • The tour is conducted with two flights from Addis Ababa to Arba Minch, and by 4X4 driving.

  • This tour is planned for two people traveling together.
