11 Days Culture tour itinerary for ethiopia: Explore Tribal And Natural Sites Of Southern Ethiopia

Take a trip to southern Ethiopia to visit various interesting tribal people at their villages and weekly multicultural markets. This trip has also a natural touch in that we will visit the Nech Sar National Park and the Mago National Park to visit their wildlife. 

DAY 01


  • Be welcomed on arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport by your guide, and transfer to your hotel.

  • Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 02

Addis – Arba Minch

  • After breakfast, drive 450 km south of Addis Ababa through the Great East African Rift Valley to Arba Minch visiting the steles of Tiya (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the villages of the Silte people who are famous for their huge beautifully painted huts.

  • Have a lunch stop at Sodo, and proceed south to Arba Minch.

  • Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 03

    In the morning, drive 42 km to Chencha which is the village of the Dorze people and visit their big bamboo huts and see how they prepare their basic food from a Enset or False Banana Tree, and their beautiful hand-woven cotton clothes.

  • After lunch, you will have a boat ride on Lake Chamo to visit big African crocodiles, hippos, and various species of low land water birds.

  • Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 04

Arba Minch – Key Afer – Jinka

  • Drive 275 km south of Arba Minch to Jinka, crossing the Woito valley, and with a stop at the most colourful weekly market of the South Omo Valley at Key Afer to visit the tribal people of Ari, Tsemai, and Benna.

  • Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 05

Jinka – Mursi Villages – Mago National Park – Jinka

  • After early breakfast, cross the Mago National Park visiting Dik Diks, and few Kudus and arrive at the village of the Mursi people. The Mursi are known for the ladies lips in which they insert huge round flat clay discs which is considered beauty in their culture.

  •  After lunch at Jinka, visit the Cultural Museum of the people of the Lower Omo Valley.

  • Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 06

Jinka – Dimeka – Turmi

  • Around Jinka, visit one of the villages of the Ari people who are known for pottery and blacksmithing.

  • Then, drive to Dimeka where you will attend another interesting weekly market attended by the Hamer and the Benna people.

  • Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 07

Turmi – Murulle – Kangate – Turmi

  • Today, you will go for an excursion to Murulle to visit the Karo people who live by the shores of the Omo River and are the fewest in number from the tribes in the Omo Valley.

  • Then, drive to Kangate to visit the other tribe of Bume or Nyangatom who live by the western banks of the Omo River who are famous for their body scarifications. Finally, drive back to Turmi for overnight.

  • Overnight at the hotel or camping.

DAY 08

Turmi – Konso – Yabello

  • After breakfast, drive to Yabello with a stop at the villages of the Konso people who are famous for their hand woven colourful cotton clothes, beautiful rock terraces, and huge walled villages which was recently registered by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

  • Then, drive to Yabello for overnight at the hotel.

DAY 09

Yabello – El Sod – Yabello

  • Go for an excursion to El Sod where the Borena people extract salt from a lake called Chew Bahir in a traditional way.

  • And stop at the ‘Singing Wells’ where the Borena people get water from deep wells by throwing buckets of waters up from about 20 meters deep by singing encouraging songs.

  • Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 10

Yabello – Awassa

  • In the morning, visit the villages of the Borena people whose women dress very colorfully.

  • Then, drive to Awassa with a stop at the villages of the Sidama people who are noted for their cultivation of Enset or False Banana, and small huts. At Lake Awassa, enjoy the beautiful sunset over the lake.

  • Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 11

Awassa – Addis + Departure

  • In the morning, visit the ‘Fish Market’ at the shore of Lake Awassa, and then drive back to Addis and have a sightseeing tour of Addis.

  • In the evening before departure, you will be my guest at one of the best traditional restaurants where you will enjoy the variety of Ethiopian meals and watch dances of  different people of Ethiopia.

  • 4400 USD Per Group (* This price is applicable for upto 4 passengers.)
  • A good conditioned Toyota 4x4 Land Cruiser with fuel, insurance and driver's allowance.

  • Professional, English-speaking guide with all his expenses (my time as a tour guide and personal assistant).

  • Boat rent at Lake Chamo and  Omo River.

  • All related government taxes.
