Addis Ababa-Ethiopia

Explore the best that Ethiopia has to offer. Learn about the history, heritage, traditions, culture, ancient and modern architecture, natural outcrops, volcanoes and many more that is scattered around Ethiopia.  

DAY 01

Arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Air port

  • Meet and greet you at the exit of luggage claim and transfer you to the hotel.

  • Overnight at hotel in Addis Ababa.

DAY 02

Addis Ababa City Tour

  • An early breakfast.

  • Visit  the National Museum (pre-historic, cultural, archaeological attractions),

  • Visit the Ethnographic Museum of Addis Ababa University (culture, dressing style, traditional practices of over 80 ethnic groups, and collection of traditional musical instruments).

  • Lunch.

  • Visit to tourist attraction sites like Emperor Minelik’s Palace,St. Raguel’s Church (after a drive to Entoto Mountain - 3,000 meter above sea level), andMerkato, the largest open market in Africa.

  • In the evening, we will host you at one of the best traditional restaurants of Addis where you can see the folk dances of the Ethiopian people and taste Ethiopian variety of meals.

  • Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 03

Drive to Bahir Dar

  • After breakfast, drive to Bahir Dar (564 Km from Addis).

  • En route, visit Debre Libanos Monastery (founded in the 13th century by priest Tekla Haimanot, today one of Ethiopia’s most renowned saints) & the museum.

  • After 100 km from Debre Libanos Monastery the road dropping more than 1000 m, gradually winds down to the bottom of the Blue Nile Gorge, which is comparable in scale to America’s Grand Canyon cited to be the largest canyon in Africa.

  • Stop for lunch at Debre Markos. 

  • Arrive in Bahir Dar (late afternoon). Check in to the hotel.

  • Dinner, rest & overnight stay in Abay Minch Lodge.

DAY 04

Boat Ride on Lake Tana to Visit Island Monasteries and visit Blue Nile Falls

  • An early breakfast.

  • Drive to Lake Tana and take a boat ride to visit the medieval period island monasteries (beautiful mural paintings, religious books & sacred) such as Kibran Gabriel (only for men) and Entos. On the Zegien Peninsula, visit Ura Kidan Mehiret, Azuwa Mariam, Mahal Giorgis.

  • After lunch, drive (some 30 Km) and visit to the Blue Nile Falls.

  • In the evening, dinner and stay the night at the hotel, Bahir Dar.

DAY 05

Drive to Gondar and Visit the Fassiladas Castles

  • Drive to Gondar (185 Km) after breakfast.

  • Check into a hotel and after a brief break, have lunch.

  • Then, visit the Royal Castles & the Bath of Emperor Fasiledes (the bath is filled with water for the important Timkat (epiphany) ceremony once a year.

  • Continue your visit to Debre Birhan Selassie Church (Trinity at the Mount of Light), the Castle of Empress Mintewab, and Kuskwam Complex which is a royal compound built by the Empress Mentewab.

  • Early in the evening, visit ‘AzmariBet’ at Traditional Music Houses.

  • Dinner at the hotel and stay there for the night, in Goha hotel.

DAY 06

Excursion to Debarq, visit the Simien Mountains National Park

  • Breakfast and then drive to Debark (100 Km from Gonder), finish formalities at the Head Quarter of the park at Debarq and continue to drive another 20km.

  • Short walk/trek. Spend the day visiting the Simien Mountains National Park (registered by UNESCO as a world heritage site, with endemic & mammals, birds, natural vegetation, & wonderful landscape).

  • Late in afternoon drive back to Debarq for an overnight stay at Simien Park Hotelor stay in Simien Lodge at Sankeber.

DAY 07

Drive to Axum

  • Right after breakfast, an early morning drive  to Axum (270 Km from Debark) through the Simien Mountains & magnificent topography & scenery, the Limalimo Gorge, Tekeze Valley.

  • Arrive in Axum late in the afternoon. Check into a hotel and take a break.

  • Dinner will be at the hotel.

  • Overnight stay in Consular or Berhana hotel.

DAY 08

City Tour in Axum

  • After breakfast, there will be sightseeing all day. To the Steale of Axum, the Inscription of Ezana, Queen Sheba’s Palace, the famous St. Mary of Zion Church, ruins of ancient palaces (built until 4th century A.D.).

  • Lunch break in between.

  • Then outside Axum, you can also visit the tombs of Kings Kaleb & Gebre Meskel dating back to the 6th century.

  • In the evening, get back to the hotel and spend the night there. 

DAY 09

Drive to Hawzen via Adigrat

  • After breakfast,  drive to Hawizen (250 Km from Axum).

  • On the way, you can visit Ethiopia’s earliest known capital city of Yeha which is considered as the birthplace of the country’s earliest civilization. It's single most remarkable antiquity is the well-preserved walls of the 12m-high stone temple of the moon that is thought to be over 2500 years old.

  • Another possible excursion is to Debre Damo monastery (only accessible for men). The Debre Damo Monastery is built on the flat- topped mountain of Debre Damo. The monastery is only accessible by climbing a rope which hangs down from a perpendicular rock, an adventure in itself!

  • Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 10

Visit the Rock-hewn Churches of Tigray; drive to Mekelle

  • After breakfast, visit some of the most beautiful medieval churches on impressive viewpoints such as Abuna Yemata Guh, Debre Maryam Korkor or Abreha WeAtsheba church; all situated near to the road between Mekele and Hawzien. It requires climbing a steep mountain to reach these churches. So, good walking/mountain shoes are recommendable.

  • Lunch at Hawizen lodge.

  • Then drive to Mekelle.

  • Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 11

Hamede Ela Drive to Hamed ela via Berhale.

  • The Danakil Depression can be said to 'begin' here. It is one of the most inhospitable regions of the world, but nonethless,is a spectacularly colourful sight, full of eye-catching colors, as in the sulphur springs. The desert has several points lying more than 100 meters (328 ft) below sea level.

  • You pass through a small town of Berhale where the camel caravan stops before we proceed to the northern highlands.

  • En route, you see many long camel caravans coming to the salt mine and others going out of the Danakil with their salt loaded camels.

  • 3-4 hrs drive to Camp Hamedela.

  • Overnight stay.

DAY 12

Hamd Ela - Dodom

  • We start after an early breakfast' at 6.30am.

  • Drive to Dodom (at the base of Erta Ale). This is, may be, one of the worst roads in the world. The 80 km distance may take about 6 hrs, passing through changing landscape of solidified lava, rock, sand and occasional palm-lined oasis. After you pass several small hamlets scattered here and there in this desert land, Dodom is about 17km from Erta Ale and it takes about 3 hrs trekking.

  • Early dinner around 17:00.

  • Trek up to Ertale at 20:00 hours. Camels transport all the camping materials and some food (sleeping materials like light mattresses and mat and water) to the rim of the volcano, where we spend the night watching the dramatic action of the boiling lava. Erta Ale ranks one of the most alluring and physically challenging natural attractions anywhere in Ethiopia. It is a shield volcano with a base diameter of 30 km and 1km square caldera at its summit. Erta Ale contains the world’s only permanent lava lake.

  • Overnight on the top of the mountain. Erta Ale is 613 meters, with a lava lake, one of only five in the world, at the summit. It is noted for being the longest existing lava lake, present since the early years of the twentieth century.

DAY 13

Ertale-Hamed Ela

  • Wake up early morning to witness the sunrise and walk 5 minutes for the southern and central pits could either correspond to an ancient pit, or to a simple collapse structure. The main pit-crater, 200 m deep and 350 m across, is sub-circular and three-storied. The smaller southern pit is 65 m wide and about 100 m deep.

  • Descend from Erta Ale around 9 am.amd Ela.

  • Leave back to Dodom after an early breakfast, if possible at 07:00 to reach latest at 10:30 am at the camp, time to relax.

  • Afterwards drive to reach Hamad Ela, better village with a total population of about 500 people.

  • Overnight camping at Hamed Ela.

DAY 14

Morning tour Drive to Ragad (Asebo)

  • The place where the localities are mining salt. Look at the activity of breaking the salt from the ground, cutting into rectangular pieces and loading on camels.

  • Drive ahead to Dallol and visit the different landscape formed by volcanic activity, Dallol + Lake Assal + camel caravans.

  • Excursion to Dallol (116 meter below sea level, one of the lowest places in the world) colourful salts mining, visit Lake Assal, follow up camel caravans and walk with the Afar people.

  • Drive back to Hamedela and proceed to Mekele.

DAY 15

Drive to Lalibela

  • After breakfast, drive to Lalibela (470 Km from Mekele) through the Ambalage Chain of Mountains.

  • Arrive in Lalibela late in the afternoon.

  • Check into a hotel, have dinner and spend the night there.

DAY 16

Visit the Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela

  • Early in the morning, after breakfast, visit 11 rock-hewn monolithic (carved from a single rock) churches of Lalibela (UNESCO World heritage site, with magnificent architecture & paintings inside the churches).

  • In the evening get back to the hotel, rest, have dinner and relax.

  • Overnight stay in Tukul Village hotel.

DAY 17

One more day to explore the Lalibela Rock-hewn Churches

  • Right after breakfast, an early morning drive  to historical churches around Lalibela like the Hill Church of Asheton Mariam (on the back of a mule or on foot), Yimerhane Kirsotos, Nakute LeAb or Genete Maryam.

  • Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 18

Drive to Kombolcha

  • An early morning drive after breakfast to Kombolcha (335 Km).

  • En route, visit Hayk Estifanos Monastery (45 Km before Kombolcha, famous for its variety of bird life near the town of Hayk).

  • Later, drive to Kombolcha & upon arrival, check into a hotel & stay the night there.

  • Overnight stay in Sunny Side hotel.

DAY 19

Drive to Addis Ababa and flight back home

  • After breakfast, drive back to Addis Ababa (375 Km).

  • Arrive in Addis Ababa late in the afternoon. Indulge in some shopping for souvenirs.

  • Finally, a farewell dinner depending on your  flight schedule.

  • Transfer to Bole International Airport for return flight back home.
