Know before you go
  • Mount Cameroon is one of Africa's largest active volcanoes, rising to 4,040 meters (13,255 ft) above the coast of West Cameroon. Mount Cameroon is also known as Cameroon Mountain or Fako (the name of the higher of its two peaks) or by its native name Mongo ma Ndemi ('Mountain of Greatness'). The mountain is part of the area of volcanic activity known as the Cameroon Volcanic Line, which also includes Lake Nyos, the site of a disaster in 1986. The most recent eruptions occurred on March 28, 1999, and May 28, 2000.

  • Before the creation of this park, the elephants had been protected by the local Bakweri tribe, who are indigenous to Mt Cameroon. Their culture is centered around this animal and hence, their attachment to the elephants is great. Their major cultural event, the Elephant dance 'malee', draws a lot of tourists in the months of November through April each year. Every village has to host the event. Tourists are mostly attracted by the Njoku masquerades.

  • Limbe is also known as Victoria and is an OPEC city founded by Britain's Alfred Saker in 1858. It’s a seaside resort for tourists, well-known due to its beautiful beach, nightlife attractions, and climate. It sits at the foot of Mt Cameroon and hosts the Cameroon Development Cooperation (CDC). The Cameroon Oil refinery (SONARA) is also located here. Major touristic attractions are the Limbe Botanic gardens, Limbe Wildlife Center, lava site at Bakingili village, down beach fish market, etc. Limbe is a must-visit for all tourists who visit Cameroon.
