5 Hours History tour itinerary for Rio de Janeiro: Use The Streets Of Rio To Peek Back In Time

Examine the progressive change in the design of buildings and monuments in the city from the colonial period to today. Visit several important heritage sites and museums to fully appreciate the city's engaging past.

DAY 01

  • Meet your Brazilian tour guide at your hotel and head downtown.

  • Stop at Cinelândia District (19th Century) with its relics of the French architectural influence such as the National Museum of Fine Arts, Theatro Municipal – the city´s Opera House, The National Library, Pedro Ernesto Palace (City Hall) and the Cultural Center of the Federal Court. 

  • En-route to Carioca Square, spot the Naval Club, the Monastery Church of Santo Antônio and the Ordem Terceira De São Francisco Da Penitência (1622). 

  • See Tiradentes Palace (State Hall), Praça XV including the Imperial Palace (the first residence of the Portuguese Royal Family), the Statue of General Osório and Mestre Valentim Fountain. 

  • Pass through the Teles Arch to reach the cobble-stoned Travessa Do Comercio and the former residence of Carmen Miranda, the Church of Our Lady of the Merchants. Also, examine the Post Office Cultural Center, France-Brazil House, Bank of Brasil Cultural Center, Candelaria Church and the Olympic Torch.

  • Finish your morning part of the tour with a visit to the Confeitaria Colombo, built during 1894 in Art-Nouveau style. 

  • Take a break for lunch. Choose between Confeitaria Colombo or any other restaurant nearby, before beginning the second part of the tour. (Lunch not included)

  • Take the LRV (Light Rail Vehicle) and head to the Olympic Boulevard to explore it. Through The Galerie Porto Maravilha (Wonder Port Galerie), a sequence of panels that make up an artistic pathway with walls that have been painted by 20 artists including the famous street art mural called Etnias, painted by Eduardo Kobra.

  • Inspect the display in MAR, The Rio Art Museum, installed at Praça Mauá, in two buildings with interconnected profiles. You can also get a nice view of the Museum of Tomorrow from MAR’s rooftop.

  • Head to the Museum of Tomorrow, a science museum in the city, right across MAR. It was designed by Spanish neo-futuristic architect Santiago Calatrava and built next to the waterfront at Pier Maua. This intricate yet captivating museum mixes science with an innovative design to focus on sustainable cities and an ecological world.

  • Return to your hotel.

  • 60 USD Per Adult (* 5 to 10 persons in a van, a minimum fee of 7 persons rate will aplly if numer of passengers is smaller than 7 persons)
  • 220 USD Per Group (* Up to 4 persons in a car ( 1 in front and 3 in the back seat))
  • Private transport in a premium SUV or Pickup truck with air conditioning

  • Mineral water – One bottle of mineral water per person kept inside a cooler.
