4-Day Illimani Peak Summit Trek From La Paz
Description
Go on a 4-day trek and climb the highest and the southernmost peak in the Cordillera Real. Start from La Paz with a view of the Illimani which is an imposing sight, and according to the local legend, it is the Queen or Mother of the mountain range. Pass through the rocky paths and stop at Puente Roto Base Camp and Nido de Condor High Camp.

Day 1 : La Paz - Pinaya - Puente Roto Base Camp expand_more
La Paz (3600m) – Pinaya (3900m) – Puente Roto, Base camp (4500m)
Drive through the Cordillera, and pass through lots of small villages and some cactus-filled valleys. Drive through the Palca canyon and stop for a short visit.
After 3 to 4 hours of driving, get to the village of Pinaya, and have a picnic lunch before the walk up to base camp.
Day 1 consists of 3 - 4 hours driving, 2 - 3 hours walking, camping (LD)

Day 2 : Puente Roto - Nido De Condor High Camp expand_more
Puente Roto – Nido del Cóndor, High camp (5400m)
Climb through the scree and rocks and reach the high camp. The porters will carry all the equipment and personal gear. It’s a long climb for the day with over 1000m ascent.
At the top, enjoy a birds-eye view of La Paz and El Alto, with the lights at night.
Day two consists of 6 - 8 hours hiking and (BLD) camping

Day 3 : High Camp - Summit - High Camp - Base Camp expand_more
High camp – Summit (6439m) – High camp – Basecamp
- Start in the morning for the climb to the summit; it will be cold.
Get roped-up and put on the crampons.
Climb on icy and snowy ridges, but nothing steeper than 50º.
Go on the last short snowy ridge and reach the summit.
Rest and take photos, before our descent.
Return to the high camp, the porters will meet and take all the equipment and personal gear back to the base camp.
Day three consists of 12 - 15 hours climbing/hiking and (BLD) camping.

Day 4 : Base Camp - Pinaya - La Paz expand_more
Return the same way; walk down to Pinaya, and meet the transport to La Paz.
Drop off at the hotel.
Day four consists of 1-2 hrs walking and 3 hours driving (BL).

Know before you go
Illimani has five peaks in total; three of them over 6,000m.
It is a fairly demanding climb, but well worth the effort for the views of La Paz and the Cordillera Real, and for the chance to summit Bolivia’s second highest peak.
