3 Hours History tour itinerary for Bruges: In And Out Of Bruges Gems On Foot
Discover Bruges' city centre on foot, strolling along the romantic canals and past medieval churches, hospitals, almshouses and buildings belonging to nobility.
The Bruges city center can only be discovered on foot. The bus parking is situated at the Bargeplein. The Beguinage is our first target.
We walk past the Wall Square where the brewery The Half Moon still brews Brugse Zot and Straffe Handrik inside the city walls. The Church of Our Lady with the Madonna of Bruges by Michelangelo is worth a visit, as is the Memling Museum which is situated in one of the oldest hospitals of Europe. Past Dijver with the Groeninghe Museum, we reach the old Salt Harbour which offers a fine view of the Belfry and the Reie canals.
The fish market for freshwater fish is situated at the Tanners' Square. Five minutes further we reach the Sea Fish Market in totally different architecture. The origin of Bruges is situated at Burg, which means Stronghold. It was here that the first Flemish Count built a castle to protect the region against invasions from Northern Europe. The square offers a thousand years of architecture with, to name a few, the Town Hall and the Basilica of the Holy Blood.
The Grote Market (main market square) is a stone throw away and is dominated by the Belfry.
Until the middle of the 19th century, there was a huge Water Hall here where small ships delivered the material which was later sold in the Cloth Market.
The last part of the walking tour is a visit to the Old Harbour.
First, we see the buildings where the first stock exchange was organized (by the Van der Beurze family) and where merchants from Venice, Florence and Genua had an office.
