Description
The siege of Sarajevo was the longest siege of a city in the history of modern warfare. Sarajevo was under constant blockade and artillery fire for 1425 days (05.04.1992-29.02.1996). During the siege of Sarajevo, only way in and out of the city was by using the handmade tunnel built under the UN controlled airport. Tunnel, often called Tunnel of Hope or Gates of Sarajevo was the only in and out of the city. Tunnel was built in order to link the city of Sarajevo, which was entirely cut off, with Bosnian-held territory on the other side of the Sarajevo Airport, and area controlled by the United Nations. Construction of Tunnel allowed food, supplies, and humanitarian aid to come into the city, and allowed people to get out. Join the Tunnel of Hope tour that starts every from the office every day at 13.00. On this tour, you will visit the Tunnel that was built in 1993 during the Siege of Sarajevo. The tunnel was the only way how people of Sarajevo could get desperately needed supplies into the surrounded city. The tunnel is located 15 km from the city center so you will go there by car on the minivan with licnensed guide.
