Know before you go
Gobustan reserve is an open-air museum littered with Neolithic rock drawings. Rock carvings, settlements, burials and inhabited caves found there are 5,000–40,000 years old. You will also be guided to see the mud volcanos. Gobustan was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site In 2007. The well-preserved sketches display ancient populations travelling on reed boats; men hunt antelope and wild bulls, women dance. Gobustan also hosts 300 of the planet’s estimated 700 mud volcanoes. In 2001, one mud volcano 15 kilometres from Baku made world headlines when it suddenly started spewing flames 15 meters high.
