Know before you go
  • Ruaha National Park: The park history dates back to 1910 when it was gazetted Saba Game Reserve by Germany. Then the name was changed by British to Rungwa Game Reserve in 1946. In 1964, the southern portion of the reserve was gazetted as Ruaha National Park, and in 1974, a small section of the South-Eastern part of the Great Ruaha River was incorporated into the park. The name “Ruaha” originates from the Hehe word “Ruvaha”, which means “river”. Ruaha National Park is part of the Rungwa–Kizigo–Muhesi ecosystem, which covers more than 45,000 sq. km. In 2008, Usangu Game Reserve and other important wetlands in the Usangu basin have been annexed into the park, making it the largest park in Tanzania and East Africa.

  • Ruaha National Park covers an area of 20,000 sq. km and a vast and magnificent wilderness area. Ruaha National Park is the home of the largest population of Elephants; it also hosts larger herds of Buffaloes, the pride of Lions, Leopards, Giraffes, Kudus, Grant’s gazelles, Wild dogs, Ostriches, Roan and Sable antelopes and more than 400 different bird species. The great Ruaha River flows through the eastern side of the park and is home to hippos, crocodiles and water birds.

  • Mikumi National Park is Tanzania’s fourth-largest National Park and the most accessible from Dar es Salaam. Within its 3230 sq. km, it is set between the Uluguru Mountains to the north and the Lumango Mountains to the south-east. Mikumi hosts buffaloes, giraffes, elephants, lions, pythons, zebras, leopards, crocodiles and many more, just to mention a few.
